After his clubs FA Cup triumph on Saturday Dave Whelan explained that he would swap cup glory for beating the drop, if given the choice.
That choice has not been afforded to him as Wigan Athletics fate looks to be out of their hands- many of the teams above them need a point to secure safety.
However as long as there is a chance that they can stay up, you can be sure that Roberto Martinez's players will fight tooth and nail in every game.
Tonight, they will take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal themselves are desperate for a win to regain their position above rivals Spurs for the Champions League spot.
Anything but a victory for Wigan will most probably see them join QPR and Reading in the Championship next season, due to their inferior goal difference.
Can Wigan do it?
It will be a tough ask and many people have written them off. Yet it was a tough ask and many people had written them off before the FA Cup Final- where they performed like a renewed side.
Obviously, the players available will have a massive impact on how the result goes- Wigan are still without Figeuroa, Ramis and Stam. Arsenal, on the other hand, welcome back Kieran Gibbs.
But with the spirit and belief that they showed on Saturday, you would be a brave man to bet against Wigan...
