Euro U21s: England vs Portugal Match Review

For England's opening match of their Euro U21 championship they took on a hard to break down Portugal side. Their opponents triumphed in the end beating England 1-0.

England took on Portugal for their opening game in the Euro Under 21 2015 Championships.

During the match it was Portugal who kept the majority of possession. With both Stones and Berahino injured before the match Gareth Southgate choose to start Moore and Kane.

Despite the attacking talent on the pitch from both sides, the first half was left 0-0 although, Kane came close with a long-range shot just before half-time.

In the second half England goalie Jack Butland managed to save what almost became an own goal, after the ball rebounded off his defender. But was unable to save Mario's goal not long after, when the ball rebounded off the post.

The defending for Portugal's goal was questionable when four defenders managed to allow a single player through who then hit the post, they then failed to react to the second ball which Mario then scored from.

After some more chances, for both sides neither were able to score a second goal, leaving the score line at 1-0 to Portugal.

Southgate will have an important job to keep the players motivated and focused on their next game.
