Costa Rica in Dreamland

On the night a 10 man Costa Rica managed to keep up with Greece after the full-time score was 1-1. The match had to be decided on penalties with Costa Rica winning 5-3.

For the 2nd game of the last 16 Costa Rica played Greece inside the Recife stadium.

Costa Rica started the game with a creative strategy as players tried to get forward whenever possible. However, Greece did try and limit their opponents chances.

During the second half Costa Rica eventually broke down the Greece defence when Bryan Ruiz scored in the 52nd minute. Despite the goal Greece stepped up their game and were able to keep Costa Rica at bay for most of the game. This was of course helped by the fact Costa Rica we're playing with 10 men as Oscar Duarte got sent off in the 65th minute.

The Greece team knew their game plan well as they kept Costa Rica quiet and scored a dramatic late equaliser thanks to Sokratis in the 90th minute. That sent the game into extra time.

Although Costa Rica were underdogs they did manage to hold on against Greece sending the game to penalties. Both teams scored their first 3 penalties, but Greece were right to be worried after they missed their 4th. Costa Rica capitalised on their mistake after Michael Umana scored the winning penalty, sending Costa Rica through to their first World Cup quarter finals.
