Gareth Bale wins PFA double

Tottenham Hotspur's winger, Gareth Bale has been named the Professional Footballer's Association Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.

A sensational season for Welsh winger Gareth Bale got even better last night, when he was named Professional Footballer's Association Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.

The Tottenham Hotspur's player is only the third player to win both awards in the same season. The two other men to complete the double were Andy Gray and Bale's idol, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bale beat favourites Luis Suarez and last season's winner Robin van Persie, to the award for the second time of his career- the Welshman first won it in the 2010/2011 season at just 21 years old.

Tremendous, game-winning performances have become standard for Bale this season. He has scored 24 goals, 19 of which were scored in Premier League games. His form and class have guided the North London club to the semi-finals of the Europa League and in contention of a top four finish.

Obviously, Bale was also included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. The young star was joined in the team by ten players representing six clubs.

The PFA Premier League Team of the Year was: David de Gea (Man United), Pablo Zabaleta (Man City), Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham Hotspur), Rio Ferdinand (Man City), Leighton Baines (Everton), MIchael Carrick (Man United), Juan Mata (Chelsea), Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur), Luis Suarez (Liverpool), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Robin van Persie (Man United).

Plaudits for the star of the night and season were rightly recieved. PFA Chairman Gordon Taylor said, "Gareth has had a tremendous season. He has had the same impact on Welsh football as Ryan Giggs did. He is part of the Southampton success story."
