Diamond Football's Team of the Season

Another season of Premiership football came to an end in fine fashion yesterday. Who makes it into Diamond Football's Team of the Season.

The Premier League season has, for some, been a disappointment- it is a criticism that one can not reject.

But a season where great team performances and rivalries have been sparse, has been peppered with some exceptional individual displays.

Manchester United ran away with the title, whilst there was triumphs for Wigan, Swansea and Chelsea also.

However this season will be remembered for retirements, a bite and one brilliant Welsh winger.

Below is our team of the year...

Goalkeeper - Simon Mignolet (Sunderland)

Despite the struggles Sunderland have encountered during the season, the Belgian has been a towering figure between the sticks. Paolo di Canio's other players owe alot to Mignolet's superb form, who was key to them beating the drop.

Defender - Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City)

Although his team's attempt at retaining the Premier League crown was as pathetic as we have seen in recent times, the Argentine has had a fine season. Tells you something about City's season, though, when their stand out performer is a fullback.

Defender - Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United)

Many had wriiten off Ferdinand at the start of the season. In truth, his career did seem to be in decline before this term. But he has performed consistently throughout the season, announcing himself as one of the best defenders in the world once again.

Defender - Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham Hotspur)

Vertonghen is another brilliant Belgian to grace the Premiership, signing for Spurs in the Summer. It is his Welsh teammate that has got all the plaudits this campaign, but the 26-year-old has been an assured figure at the back since making his debut.

Defender - Leighton Baines (Everton)

For many years now, Baines has been knocking at the door of England's number one left back. Until this season, Ashley Cole has always pipped him- but can Roy Hodgson justify not choosing the Everton player now? Atleast his defendings better than his haircuts.

Midfield - Michael Carrick (Manchester United)

Throughout his United career, Carrick has had to deal with his tireless efforts going unnoticed by the majority. But that has all changed this season with a nomination for Player of the Season. His calm passing has been key to United regaining the Premiership title.

Midfield - Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

It has been a record-breaking season for the Chelsea man, whose professional performances have continued despite the unrest at Stamford Bridge. His consistent displays were rewarded early last week when Lampard signed a new one year deal with Chelsea.

Midfield - Juan Mata (Chelsea)

One of the most technically gifted players the English game has seen for awhile, Mata carried Chelsea through difficult times this season with his expert passing. Many at Chelsea have claimed he is the new Zola- who has been voted Chelsea's greatest ever player.

Forward - Robin van Persie (Manchester United)

If there was one player that embodied the difference between United and City this season, it has to be Robin van Persie. The Dutchman has scored more Premier League goals than any other player this campaign and could be Sir Alex's last great signing.

Forward - Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur)

The one name that has to be in this list is Gareth Bale. The Welshman has been on a completely different level this season to any of his peers at Spurs. He won the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year- only the third player to do so. Will he be a Spurs player next season?

Forward - Luis Suarez (Liverpool)

Before that unfortunate incident with Ivanovic, many touted Luis Suarez as Player of the Season and saw him as the third best player in world (behind Ronaldo and Messi). Since, he has become something of a forgotten man on many people's lists- but not this one.
