Sir Alex Ferguson to retire

After 26 years as manager of Manchester United. it has been announced and confirmed that Sir Alex Ferguson will retire at the end of the season.

It was announced this morning that after 26 years in charge, Sir Alex Ferguson is to step down as Manchester United manager at the end of the season.

In his 26 years at the helm, he has overseen United's fanbase increase to become the biggest in the world. He has won 38 trophies, including; 13 titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and five League Cups.

Since taking over from Ron Atkinson on 6 November 1986, Sir Alex has become the most successful manager in the history of the British game.

His most successful year came in 1999 when United famously won the treble.; the title, FA Cup and Champions League.

News broke late last night and it was confirmed by the club and the man this morning. Within minutes, the footballing world were paying their tributes to the great manager.

Professionals such as Paul Jewell commented on the retirement and Twitter went crazy; #fergie, #SAF, #thankyousiralex, #fergieretires, #MUFC and Old Trafford all occupied the top trending topics.

Speculation of who will take over from Sir Alex has been rife. Many believe that David Moyes is most likely to become the next United manager as he is yet to sign a new contract with Everton.

However, many also think Jose Mourinho may be returning to England, but to manage Manchester United rather than Chelsea.

This will be a very interesting Summer of football...
